Pool deck heat and cooler materials

Quick answer

HomeAdvisor describes travertine as staying cool underfoot and prices it at $15 to $27 per square foot installed. HomeGuide prices pavers around a pool at $12 to $25. No lab temperature gap for a Volusia deck was found. No code section we read requires a cool-deck coating.

The temperature number we will not print

People ask how many degrees cooler travertine is than charcoal concrete. A single delta would need a test: same sun, same hour, same wind, measured surface temperature. That test was not in the HomeAdvisor page, the HomeGuide page, or the CMHA notes we used for base design. HomeAdvisor describes travertine as a dense limestone that stays cool underfoot. That is a product description on a cost page, not a thermometer reading from Ormond Beach. This guide will not turn it into '20 degrees cooler' or any other unsourced gap.

What the cost pages do support is the price of choosing the stone people pick for bare feet. Installed travertine is $15 to $27 per square foot. The 600 square foot line on that HomeAdvisor table is $9,000 to $16,200 before removal. Removal of an existing patio can reach $3,700 on the same page. HomeGuide's around-a-pool band is $12 to $25 and is not limited to travertine. Porcelain on HomeGuide's installed table is $12 to $20, about $7,200 to $12,000 for 600 square feet as straight math. We did not find a heat ranking that puts porcelain above or below travertine in degrees.

Color, shade, and the hour you walk out

A light unit in full western sun can still be uncomfortable at 3 p.m. A dark unit in the same spot is the case homeowners complain about. Shade from a cage, a roof overhang, or a tree changes the result more than a brand name, and we are not assigning a percentage to that shade. If you are comparing two samples, put both in the sun on the same afternoon and touch them. That is a field check, not a published test, and it is more honest than a number this site invented.

Sealer temperature is a separate limit, and it is on the jug, not in the building code. Alliance Gator's natural-stone sealer sheet dated July 17, 2025 says the surface must be cool to the touch and the air should be between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit when that sealer goes down. Waypoint's WPT300 sheet, written for travertine, says surface temperatures above 95 degrees Fahrenheit are marginal because the carrier flashes off before the treatment bonds, and it tells applicators to work in the morning where afternoons exceed that heat. Those are application windows. They are evidence that a Florida deck gets hot. They are not a ranking of travertine against concrete.

Cool-deck coatings are a different trade

A cementitious cool-deck coating is sprayed or troweled over concrete. It is not an interlocking paver, and it is not travertine. We did not find a section of the Florida Building Code, Residential, in the pages we read for this wave that requires a cool-deck coating around a private pool. We also did not find a manufacturer test we are willing to quote for how many degrees that coating drops a surface in Volusia sun. If a bidder sells a coating, ask for that product's data sheet and for the surface it is allowed to cover. Do not let the word cool replace the data sheet.

New Smyrna Beach still counts patios toward the 60 percent impervious cap on the city's lot sheet. A cooler material does not erase square footage. Permeable units are not automatically exempt. That math is on the permeable pavers guide. Other cities were not found to use that same sheet.

How this fits the other pool pages

  1. Read travertine versus concrete pavers for the material comparison that is not a temperature test.
  2. Read pavers over a concrete pool deck before you skip demolition. HomeAdvisor says overlay works on sound concrete.
  3. Use the pool deck cost guide and the calculator so the area is the same on both bids.
  4. If the deck will be sealed, open travertine sealing before you buy a concrete-paver jug for stone.
  5. Ask the installer to walk a wet sample. Polished stone can be the wrong savings when the deck is wet.

What this page will not guess

Last checked November 1, 2026. No surface-temperature delta, no solar-reflectance index, and no 'cool deck' brand ranking is published here. Barefoot comfort is why people pay the travertine band. The band is sourced. The degrees are not. Daytona Pavers matches you with an independent installer and does not sell stone.

Questions homeowners ask

What pool deck pavers do not get hot?

HomeAdvisor describes travertine as staying cool underfoot. We did not find a degree figure for a Florida deck. Light colors and shade help. Dark concrete gets the complaints. Last checked November 1, 2026.

Is travertine cooler than concrete pavers?

That is the usual reason people buy it, and the cost page describes it that way. A measured gap for Volusia was not found, so this site will not print one.

Are porcelain pavers cooler than travertine?

We did not find a surface-temperature comparison. Porcelain has a HomeGuide installed band of $12 to $20 per square foot. That is a price, not a heat ranking.

Does Florida require a cool-deck coating by the pool?

No section we read in this wave requires a cementitious cool-deck coating on a private pool deck. Ask the city if you are being told otherwise, and ask for the code citation.

Will sealer make the deck cooler?

Not in any source we read. Some sealers cannot be applied when the surface is already hot. That is an application limit, not a cooling claim.

Can you match a pool-deck installer?

Yes. Choose pool deck on the form. We are not the contractor, and the HomeAdvisor totals are not a quote.

Request a quote after you have a range in mind

Daytona Pavers is a free service that connects homeowners with local, independent paver installers. It is not itself the contractor. Your request is shared with a local installer so they can contact you with a quote.

Tell us about the project. We pass the request to a local, independent installer. You do not pay Daytona Pavers for the introduction, and you decide whether to hire anyone.

A budget range is optional. It is a planning hint, not a promise. Read how we handle this information on the privacy page.
