Pavers in DeLand, Florida

Quick answer

DeLand is inland Volusia, the county seat, roughly a half hour west of the beach. Salt spray is not the story. Oak shade, leaf tannins, mildew, and a mix of narrow downtown lots and larger west-side yards are the story. A beachside travertine pitch is less automatic here. Concrete pavers in a mid tone are a common driveway choice, and pool decks still benefit from a lighter color.

Shade is a maintenance plan

Live oaks keep patios cooler and keep them damp. Mildew and tannin stains are normal. A cleaning and sealing visit will come up more often than it does on a sunny LPGA driveway. Sealer also dries slower in the shade, so the installer should not roll product into a humid afternoon and leave.

Downtown, Stetson, and the west side

Streets near downtown and Stetson can be narrow, with historic houses and tight access. Say if a truck cannot sit in the drive. West and north of town, lots get longer and some yards have real slope. Newer communities, including areas people know as Victoria Park, often have architectural review. Residential mail is often 32720 or 32724. DeLand is an incorporated city. Some nearby addresses are unincorporated Volusia, and the permit desk changes with that line.

Soil that is not only beach sand

You still need compaction, fabric where the subgrade is soft, and edges that keep the field from walking. Pockets of clay and roots are more of a conversation than they are on the barrier island. Roots that will win should be called out before the walkway or patio is paved over them.

Driveway planning still starts at $10 to $18 per sq ft, about $6,000 to $10,800 for 600 square feet before tear-out. Patio numbers are in the patio cost guide.

Driveways sit under the accessory permit

DeLand's building page lists driveways with accessory buildings and structures, alongside fences, patios, decks, and detached garages. The city processes permits inside the city limits. Unincorporated addresses go to Volusia County. The page also lists a non-refundable application fee of $100 for residential projects and $200 for commercial projects. That is the application fee, not the paver price. The 2020 Census count is 37,351.

Shade from live oaks is the maintenance story. Mildew and tannin stains are normal, and they are why cleaning comes up more often than on a sunny west-side driveway. Victoria Park and other planned sections often have architectural review. Chapter 720 is the state framework. The color list is the association's. Downtown and Stetson streets are tight. Say if a truck cannot stage in the drive. West Volusia higher ground is where the USDA description places better-drained Tavares sands, next to poorly drained Myakka flatwoods. Your lot can be either. Roots that will win should be called out before a walk is paved over them.

  1. Confirm city versus county, then use the accessory-structure path if DeLand is the jurisdiction.
  2. Budget the $100 residential application fee as paperwork, not as the install.
  3. Plan for shade, tannins, and a slower sealer dry time under oaks.
  4. If the association reviews the front drive, submit the sample before demolition.

Questions about pavers in DeLand

Are DeLand pavers different from Daytona Beach pavers?

The units can be the same. The site is not. DeLand has more shade, more tannin stains, less salt, and more variety in lot size. Travertine is still available. It is just less of a default than it is beside a beach pool.

Who permits a DeLand driveway?

Inside the city, start with the City of DeLand. If your address is just outside the city, it may be Volusia County. The installer should know which, and you can confirm.

Will oak trees ruin a new patio?

They will stain it and, if roots are shallow, they can lift it. Cleaning handles the stains. A patio paved on top of a major root will move. Ask the installer to walk the shade with you.

Do you cover DeLand even though you are called Daytona Pavers?

Yes. DeLand is one of the cities we match. The name is the service area's center, not a limit at the city line.

How does DeLand classify a driveway permit?

The city lists driveways under Accessory Building or Structure permits, with patios and similar work. Unincorporated Volusia is a county permit. The residential application fee listed on the city page is $100.
