The joint is a system
A paver field stays put because the units are tight, the edge is held, and the joints are full of sand that has set. Polymeric sand is joint sand with a binder. It needs a dry window after it is watered in. June through October afternoon storms are why installers watch the forecast. If the sand never set, or a pressure washer blew it out, the joint is a planting bed. Ants prefer that loose fill. They are a symptom of an open joint more often than they are the reason the patio failed.
When sand is the right job
If the field is flat, the edge is intact, and the joints are simply empty, a clean and re-sand is the maintenance visit. HomeGuide includes joint sand in its $1.50 to $3.25 per sq ft sealing band, about $900 to $1,950 on 600 square feet. You can re-sand without sealing. Sealing is optional and, on new concrete, often better delayed because of efflorescence. Last checked November 1, 2026.
Shade, irrigation, and the beach
Oak shade in DeLand and older yards keeps joints damp, which is what weeds want. Irrigation that oversprays a walk does the same and adds rust on light pavers. Beachside salt does not stop weeds by itself. It does make some sealers haze and some metal edges fail, and a failed edge opens a long joint down the border. Look at the border before you blame the sand brand.
What not to do
A pressure washer on a high tip will empty every joint you just paid to fill. Pull weeds by hand or cut them, then wash on a setting that does not mine the sand. Do not mix a home herbicide recipe on this page. We are not publishing a chemical method. If you want a company to clean, re-sand, and only then decide on sealer, say that on the form. If ants are coming from a nest under a dipped patio, the nest is in the void. The void is the repair.
- Check whether the field is flat. A dip means repair, not just sand.
- Check the edge restraint, especially within a block of the ocean.
- Plan the re-sand for a dry stretch. Afternoon storms undo polymeric sand that has not set.
- Tell the cleaner not to blast the joints empty.
- If the pavers are new and pale, do not seal the same day you re-sand.
- Price the visit with HomeGuide's band, then accept that a tiny walk may not hit the low per-foot number.
Where this shows up around Volusia
The open joint looks the same in a photo and behaves differently by city. A Holly Hill pad next to a lawn gets grass seed in the border the week the edge restraint slips. A Venetian Bay drive in New Smyrna gets the same weeds plus whatever the association will allow you to use on a visible front yard. A DeLand walk under oaks stays wet enough that the sand never quite sets if it was watered in on a humid afternoon. A beach walk in Daytona Beach Shores loses sand to wind as much as to ants. Tell the company which of those yards you have. A generic 'we spray and sand' visit that ignores a failed plastic edge will be back in one rainy season.
Ants deserve a plain description. They carry sand out because the joint is loose, and they like the void under a paver that has already dropped. Poison on the surface does not refill the base. If you see a little volcano of sand on top of a low paver, you are looking at both problems. The repair is to lift that unit, fill and compact what washed out, set the paver, then sand the joint on a dry day. Angi's minor repair total of $200 to $500 is the national figure for swapping a few units, not a promise that an ant hill costs that. If the volcanoes run the length of the drive, you are past a few units and into the larger $1,000 to $2,500 resetting range, or into a replacement conversation. Look at the pattern before you buy a bottle.
Which sand, and what the sky is doing
Filling a sound joint only works if the product can cure. Three manufacturer rain windows are compared on the polymeric sand guide. Pick the bag before you pick the afternoon.

Questions homeowners ask
Why do weeds grow between pavers in Florida?
Open, damp joints are a seed bed. Summer rain and shade keep them that way. Full, set joint sand removes the bed. Sand over a failed base does not.
Do ants mean the install failed?
Ants move into loose sand. They often show up after the joints were washed out or never set. If the pavers are also low, the base is part of the problem.
Should I seal to stop weeds?
Sealer is not weed control by itself. Joint sand is the plug. HomeGuide's full visit includes sand and costs $1.50 to $3.25 per square foot nationally. Sealing a wet or brand-new surface can haze.
Can I pressure wash the weeds out?
You can remove the tops and also the sand. Then you have a cleaner joint and a new weed cycle. Wash gently, then re-sand.
Will Daytona Pavers pull the weeds?
No. We match you with an independent company for cleaning, re-sanding, or repair. We do not do the work.
Request a quote after you have a range in mind
Daytona Pavers is a free service that connects homeowners with local, independent paver installers. It is not itself the contractor. Your request is shared with a local installer so they can contact you with a quote.
Tell us about the project. We pass the request to a local, independent installer. You do not pay Daytona Pavers for the introduction, and you decide whether to hire anyone.
