What the haze is
Concrete pavers are made with cement. As moisture moves through a new unit, minerals can deposit on the face and dry white or light gray. The haze is often blotchy. It shows more on dark charcoal pavers than on a light shell color. It can look worse after the first month than on installation day, because the pavers are still giving up moisture. That timing fools people into thinking the crew used a bad batch.
Mold and mildew are usually darker, green, or black, and they favor shade under oaks in DeLand and older Port Orange yards. Irrigation rust is orange and sits where a sprinkler hits. Tire marks are black in the wheel path. Efflorescence is the pale one. If you are staring at a white film on pavers that were set this season, start with that explanation before you buy a harsh cleaner.
Why sealing too soon makes it worse
HomeGuide's sealing guide says solvent-based sealer is not breathable and that trapped moisture can create a white haze. It also says pavers must be completely dry before that kind of product, often a day or two after washing. A film rolled onto pavers that are still efflorescing seals the minerals in place. You then own a hazy coating instead of a temporary deposit. Water-based sealers on that page are described as more breathable. Breathable is not a promise that day-one sealing is wise. Give new concrete pavers time. There is no ordinance that sets the number of weeks. The practical test is whether the haze is still spreading.
Salt crust is the beachside lookalike
On Daytona Beach Shores, Ponce Inlet, beachside New Smyrna, and Ormond-by-the-Sea, wind leaves a salty film that also looks pale. Rinse it. A mineral cleaner aimed at efflorescence will not fix salt, and a salt rinse will not finish true efflorescence if the pavers are still new and damp inside. Say which coast you are on when you request cleaning. Inland Deltona haze is much more likely to be the concrete itself.
What a cleaner can and cannot do
HomeGuide prices a full clean, joint sand, and seal at $1.50 to $3.25 per sq ft, about $900 to $1,950 for 600 square feet. Pressure washing alone is $0.35 to $0.80 per sq ft. Washing too hard blows the joint sand out, which is how a cleaning visit creates a weed and ant problem. If the field has also sunk, sealer and cleaner will not lift it. That is a repair. - Decide whether the film is pale and on new concrete, dark and in the shade, orange at a sprinkler, or salty after a windy week.
- Do not seal new concrete pavers while the haze is still spreading.
- If you do seal later, ask whether the product is breathable and what it feels like wet.
- Keep the pressure washer off a setting that empties the joints.
- If only one area is white and also low, look at the base before you buy chemistry.
A walk-through for the first season
Watch the haze for a few dry weeks before you spend money. On a sunny Deltona or Orange City driveway the deposit often looks worse after the first wetting and then dulls as the units finish drying. On a shaded DeLand patio the same chemistry can linger because the surface never fully dries, which is also when mildew joins the party and the stain stops being only white. If the pale film is only on the ocean side of a Ponce Inlet deck after a northeast wind, rinse it and see if it returns the next calm day. Salt comes back with the wind. Mineral haze from the paver fades as the cement finishes its early life. Those two tests cost nothing and keep you from buying a cleaner for the wrong stain.
If you do hire a cleaner, ask them to test one paver in a corner. Some acid-style cleaners etch the face and leave a dull spot that is more obvious than the haze was. HomeGuide's wash rate of $0.35 to $0.80 per square foot is for pressure washing, not for a specialty poultice. A quote far above the full $1.50 to $3.25 band should say what extra chemistry is in it. A quote that includes sealer on day one, while the corner test is still chalky, is the quote to send back. Daytona Pavers will match you with a company. We do not pick the chemical, and we do not stand behind a jug we did not specify.
Stone haze is a different sheet
White mineral bloom in new concrete is the subject of this page. A white film wiped too late on travertine is described on a stone-sealer sheet, not as efflorescence. If the deck is travertine, switch to travertine sealing before you buy a concrete cleaner.

Questions homeowners ask
Does efflorescence on pavers go away?
On many new concrete pavers the pale deposit fades as the units dry and weather. Sealing over it can stop that and leave a permanent haze. There is no clock we will invent for your brand of paver.
Is the white stuff mold?
Usually no. Mold is darker and likes shade. A pale film on new concrete pavers is the mineral deposit. A pale film after a salty wind on the barrier island may be salt. Rinse salt. Do not assume they are the same stain.
Can I seal over efflorescence?
You can, and you may lock it in. HomeGuide notes that non-breathable sealer traps moisture and can haze. Wait until the deposit stops spreading and the surface is dry.
Will a sealer remove the haze?
No. Sealer is a coating, not a cleaner. Clean first, and only if the pavers are ready. Daytona Pavers does not sell sealer.
How much does it cost to deal with it?
If you hire a clean and seal later, HomeGuide's national band is $1.50 to $3.25 per square foot including the wash and joint sand. That is not a quote, and it is not the price of waiting.
