A 12 by 16 foot patio is about 200 square feet, enough for a table. A 20 by 20 foot patio is 400 square feet and starts to feel like another room. Use the patio cost guide to see how those sizes pencil out, then add steps or a seat wall only if you actually want them.
Base, doors, and rain
Installers often build patio bases around 4 to 6 inches of compacted rock over fabric when the sand is soft. That is typical practice, not a site design. The finished pavers need to stay lower than the door sill so wind-driven rain does not run inside. If the yard is flat, the crew may need a short step or a small drain. Pitch toward the house is a defect, not a style.
Shade changes the maintenance
Live oaks are common from DeLand to the older parts of Port Orange and Ormond. Shade keeps a patio cooler and also grows mildew. Leaf tannins stain light pavers. A patio in full sun on the beachside stays drier and hotter. Neither one is wrong. They just need different expectations about cleaning. See sealing and cleaning.
Planning ranges
Concrete paver patios often fall around $10 to $17 per sq ft installed. HomeGuide publishes $3,800 to $6,800 for a 20 by 20 foot patio. Straight math at the same per-foot band puts 200 square feet around $2,000 to $3,400, and small visits can price above that math. Travertine moves toward $15 to $27 per sq ft. Steps, seat walls, and a grill pad are separate lines. We are not publishing a seat-wall dollar range without a source we will cite.
- Furniture will telegraph a soft base. If chairs rock, the base was the problem.
- Curves and roundovers look soft and take more cuts.
- An HOA may care about the color even when the patio is in the backyard. Check before the pallet arrives.
- If you might add a fire pit or seat wall, say so now so the patio height and gas sleeve are planned together.

Questions homeowners ask
How much does a paver patio cost in Volusia County?
Concrete pavers often plan around $12 to $18 per square foot installed. A 400 square foot patio is about $4,800 to $7,200. Smaller patios can cost more per foot because the crew still has to mobilize. These are planning ranges, not quotes.
Will a patio cause water to enter the house?
It should not. The pavers need to finish below the door and slope away from the wall. If the yard is higher than the floor, the installer has to solve that with a step, a drain, or both.
Do patios need the same base as a driveway?
Usually no. Patios do not carry cars, so the base is often thinner than a driveway. It still has to be compacted. Sand alone under the pavers is not a base.
Can I add a seat wall later?
Yes, but it is cheaper to set the footing height while the patio is open. Tell the installer if a wall or fire pit is in the plan.
Request a quote for patios
Daytona Pavers is a free service that connects homeowners with local, independent paver installers. It is not itself the contractor. Your request is shared with a local installer so they can contact you with a quote.
Tell us about the project. We pass the request to a local, independent installer. You do not pay Daytona Pavers for the introduction, and you decide whether to hire anyone.
